Artist Statement

During the ten years that I have been learning and acquiring experience in the world of performing arts, I have reached a point where I believe that this medium is like an ocean that has existed since ancient times, and we have now found out about this endless ocean. With our latest facilities, we are trying to utilize them more optimally; however, I know that it is impossible to overcome all the big waves in such an ocean. Sometimes, I fail and my boat breaks, sometimes, I get pulled under the water, and sometimes, I lose my way. However, I know that I have to work hard to move forward, even if I am struggling beneath the turbulent waves of the ocean.

So far, I have tried to liberate myself; Freedom in the creation and presenting. To better understand that, I was inspired by great artists such as Jim Morrison in poetry, Ilka Schönbein and Romeo Castellucci in theater, Philip Glass and John Cage in music, and Ferdowsi and Obeid Zakani in Persian classical literature.

In this way, I have attempted not to lose my association with visual art and music because, to me, the process of creation starts from mental images, music, and different sounds. Consequently, in this regard, I train my eyes and ears by seeing and hearing frequently to keep open the window of inspiration from great artists. I think I will not earn freedom in creation unless I am in contact with other areas of art. I believe that freedom is not only pivotal in the creation of artwork by the artist, but there is also a kind of freedom of action and liberation whose existence depends on the social and political laws of each geography. In this case, considering the conditions of Iran, it is complicated to attain freedom of action in presenting the work. But so far, I have tried to create performances that reflect my concerns and mindsets against the conventional rules of the society I come from. After reaching liberation in creating my art, I can freely share the ideas I have repressed in my work with the audience as much as possible and be sincere with them.

I know dance as the most expressive art because the movements beyond the presence or absence of music can have their independent rhythm. Dance, like theater, relies on performance, but it can happen in front of the audience, or the dancer can perform for herself in front of the mirror; this difference is noteworthy to me. The choreographer can constantly push it towards dance theatre like Pina's works or set a bold border between dance and theater and keep the performance within the scope of mere dance. Therefore, in my latest work, I want to discover the commonalities between the theater of objects and dance (in its contemporary sense) with the theme of the carpet in Iran.

In the future, I would like to reflect on the concept of freedom from the traditional constraints of society in more detail in my works. I hope that by taking such a path, I will go further in the ocean of performing arts and share my ventures with different people.
